Jagannath University: BCL dismantles plaque engraved with Khaleda’s name
Some Chhatra League activists have dismantled the plaque of Jagannath University (JnU), engraved with the name of former prime minister Khaleda Zia, on its campus in Old Dhaka.
Witnesses said BCL activists, led by psychology student Mithun Barai, damaged the plaque in front of the university’s administration building on Monday night.
Asked about the matter, Mithun yesterday said, “The plaque of the university cannot be engraved with the name of a convicted person.”
“Khaleda Zia [BNP chairperson] has been convicted in corruption cases. That’s why we did so,” he told The Daily Star.
However, JnU Chhatra Dal President Rafikul Islam said, “I have talked with the university administration about the matter. They said the plaque will be restored soon.”
The JCD will go for a movement if the plaque is not restored in two days, he told this correspondent.
JnU Proctor Mostofa Kamal said they would investigate the incident and take action against those involved in it.
The plaque would be restored soon, he added.
Earlier in June 2017, some BCL activists had dismantled the plaque. At that time, the university authorities restored it following protests by the Chhatra Dal, pro-BNP student front.
The then BNP-led government on September 27, 2005, had declared the erstwhile Jagannath College a full-fledged university after the parliament passed the Jagannath University Act, 2005.
The plaque was installed on November 2 of 1995 by the then Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
