Criminals shoot VDP man dead
Unknown assailants shot a member of the Village Defence Party (VDP) dead in Ashuganj upazila yesterday morning.
Bhanulal Chandra Das, 35, son of Haricharan Das of Talshahar village and a member of VDP at Talshahar Union Parishad, was killed on Talshahar-Bahadurpur regional road around 9:30am.
Masud Alam, officer-in-charge of Ashuganj police, said, “The assailants shot Bhanulal, who was inside the moving Jeep of Talshahar UP Chairman Abu Shama, and left him dead on the spot.”
Amir Hossain, the chairman's son, told The Daily Star that Bhanulal along with the driver was going to Ashuganj to buy fuel. All on a sudden, some unknown youth opened fire on the Jeep. Bhanulal was shot in his head and died on the spot.
He said, “Both my father and I have been under threat since the December 30 national polls by some bigwigs of Awami League in Ashuganj over election issues though we both belong to the ruling party. The rival group might have planned the attack contemplating we were inside the vehicle.”
The victim's younger brother Ranjit Chandra Das told this correspondent, “My brother very often and unnecessarily carried out the chairman family tasks. That is why he was accompanying the driver and fell victim to others' political rivalry.”
The OC said they were investigating the incident with utmost importance and none involved would be spared. The body of the victim was sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy, he added.
