Bus driver held over killing of passenger
Police yesterday arrested a bus driver, accused of killing a passenger by running the vehicle over him following an altercation over bus fare at Bagherbazar area on Sunday.
Bus driver Rokon Uddin, 35, was arrested in Dhobaura area of Mymensingh district yesterday evening, police said.
After the incident, the victim’s brother filed a murder against the driver, his helpers and other staffers of the bus, said Delwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Mawna Highway Police Station.
According to the case statement, the victim Salahuddin and his wife Parul Akhter were passengers of the Alam-Asia Paribahan bus, driven by Rokon, and were heading towards Gazipur’s Bagherbazar from Mymensingh.
Salahuddin had an altercation with bus helpers over the fare. He informed his brother, Jamaluddin, about the matter and asked him to come to the Bagherbazar bus stop.
When the bus reached the stop, the helpers pushed Salahuddin off, while Parul was still inside, the statement said.
Salahuddin and Jamaluddin then stood in front of the bus to stop it from going further. They asked the driver to let Parul disembark and to explain why the helpers pushed Salahuddin off.
But the bus driver did not pay heed and ran the bus over Salahuddin.
Salahuddin’s wife, who was still in the bus, began shouting and asking the driver to stop the bus so that she could get down.
After few minutes, the driver slowed the bus down and let Parul get down.
The driver then drove the bus to Hotapara area, from where he and the helpers fled, leaving the vehicle.
