In bliss with braille books
The distribution of braille books has brought immense happiness among the visually impaired students in Barishal.
Sarkari Dristy Pratibandhi Bidyalay Barishal, known as the only specialised schools for visually impaired students in the country, has distributed braille books among its students on the first day of this year.
Visiting the school on Wednesday and yesterday, this correspondent found students delighted with their new books.
Some of them were touching their new books, some were taking the smell and some were running inside the school compound.
A fifth grader of the school, Jui, said she understood her whole world through the braille books.
A second grader, Lamia, said new books were like dreams becoming true for her.
Parvez, a ninth grader, said he was anxious that he could not have received new books. But he was happy that he received the much expected books in time.
Tenth grader Imran said he wanted to pursue his higher studies in the institution as it offers him all the facilities he needs.
The school has a capacity of accommodating 110 students in total and currently has 60 students only.
Shamsunnahar Begum, acting headmaster of the school, said the institution was established in 1964 on 4.30-acre land under Social Service Directorate, Barishal.
Only five specially trained teachers are appointed to teach visually impaired students up to fifth grade in this school, she added.
Sajjad Pervez, Probationary Officer at Social Service Depart in Barishal, said around 586 visually impaired people are in Barishal and 40 percent of them are eligible to take education.
