AL man shot dead as two factions clash in Faridpur
A man was shot dead and 10 others, three of them bullet-hit, were injured as two groups of ruling Awami League clashed over establishing supremacy in Faridpur's Boalmari upazila yesterday morning.
Some houses were damaged and looted during the clash in Joypasha village, locals said.
The deceased, Nadim Uddin Ali, 20, was son of Idris Ali of the village.
Locals said there had been a longstanding conflict between Syed Abul Bashar Mia, president of Boalmari upazila Krishok League and also former chairman of Boalmari Upazila Parishad, and Abu Sayed Mia, an AL activist and a former member of Parameshwardi Union Parishad, over establishing dominance in the locality.
Bashar is a supporter of Ariful Rahman Dolon, vice-president of Krishok League central committee, while Sayed is a follower of Kazi Sirajul Islam, former local lawmaker and also vice-president of Krishok League central committee.
A football match was scheduled to be held on AC Bosh Institute field around 3:00pm yesterday. Ariful was to be present there as the chief guest. So, Bashar “forced” Sayed's supporters in the morning to join the programme.
Following this, a clash broke out between the supporters of the two groups around 8:00am. They attacked each other with locally made sharp weapons. Bashar and his brother also opened fire. Eleven people were wounded in the clash, locals said, adding that four of them sustained bullet injuries.
The injured were taken to Boalmari Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctors declared Nadim dead. Three other bullet-hit are Mezba Ali, 25, Rasel Ali, 26, and Emon Ali, 18. They were undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Bashar said, “Abu Sayed Mia and his supporters attacked our houses and also beat up my supporters. Then I fired bullets to save myself. But no one was injured from my firing.”
Sayed said Bashar forced his followers to join Dolon's programme, leading to the clash. Bashar opened fire during the clash and three of his supporters suffered bullet wounds and one died.
Bashar's men also damaged and looted 20 houses of his supporters, he alleged. But Bashar denied the allegation.
FM Shamim Hasan, officer-in-charge of Boalmari Police Station, said on information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Additional policemen have been deployed in the area to fend off any further untoward incident, he said, adding that police recovered the body and sent it to Faridpur Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
