Unidentified miscreants allegedly tried to kidnap the president of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) from capital's Bijoy Sarani crossing today.

Failing to abduct, the kidnapers allegedly threatened Shahed Chowdhury, also city editor of the Bangla daily Somokal, to kill him.

Shahed was on his way to the office of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Gulshan from the DRU office to attend an iftar party.

The miscreants in a private car stopped the microbus in which Shahed was travelling in around 6:30pm near Bijoy Sarani.

They tried to drug Shahed out of the microbus but failed as the passersby came forward to help him.

Shahed immediately informed the matter to the high officials of police.

Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Tejgaon Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.
