Solidarity concert for Baul Ranesh Thakur to be held on May 30

The music room of Baul Ranesh Thakur was burnt down by unidentified miscreants on May 18. Thakur, a disciple of Baul Shah Abdul Karim, is an independent troubadour.

To stand by him and all other Baul musicians, Bangladeshi artistes from different countries will organise the live concert, 'Solidarity Concert for Baul Ranesh Thakur' on May 30 (Saturday).

The concert, which will be an instrument-free programme, will go live on Saturday at 8 pm (Bangladesh time) on the official Facebook pages of Das and Co, Nagarnat and Sylhettoday24.com, the three associates of the event.

Renowned musicians Baul Shafi Mondol, Bappa Mazumder, Rahul Anand, Kanak Aditya, Shibu Kumar Shil, Pinto Ghosh, Sayed Hasan Tipu, Baul Basir Uddin Sarkar and Baul Surjyalal Das among others will perform at the concert.

Ashiquzzaman Tulu is scheduled to join the concert from Canada, while Gouri Choudhury, Sohini Alam from the band, Khiyo, and Amit Dey are scheduled to join from the United Kingdom.

Tajul Imam from the USA, Rajib Das from India, Paromita Dey from Australia and Shabnam Surita Dana from Germany will also join the live programme.

"This concert is not only to protest the heinous attack on Baul Ranesh Thakur's home, but also to protest continuous attacks on Baul musicians of Bangladesh," said Ujjal Das, coordinator of the concert. All musicians will join the concert from their respective homes.

On May 18, some miscreants burnt down Baul Ranesh Thakur's music room at Ujandhal village of the Derai upazila in Sunamganj. His instruments and music diaries, which included collections of his life's work, were also burnt in the attack.
