Artist Murtaja Baseer undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital
Eminent artist Murtaja Baseer is undergoing treatment at the capital’s Apollo Hospital since Saturday.
According to his elder daughter, Munira Baseer, he is admitted to the hospital due to cardiac arrest and reduction of oxygen consumption rate, along with other problems. “At the moment, he is doing slightly better than before. However, the doctors are not satisfied with his health condition,” Munira informs The Daily Star. “Right now, his lungs are idle and he is consuming oxygen artificially. He had a heart failure due to increasing fluid in his lungs.”
The artist needs to stay under observation till his breathing speed is stable. Munira also shared that if the doctors allow, he will be discharged from the hospital by Thursday. “My father is psychologically strong. I want to take him back home as soon as possible and I hope to keep him under medical supervision regularly,” says Munira.
Murtaja Baseer is considered one of the foremost painters of Bangladesh. He is known for working with abstract realism. The Wings and Epitaph for the Martyrs series are among the finest works of the artist. He is the son of scholar and linguist Dr Muhammad Shahidullah.
