Melody and dance in their purest forms
Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) arranged an event of classical music and dance at its Music and Dance Centre Auditorium on April 25. National award-winning singers -- Swani Zubayeer and Priyanka Gope -- performed classical music while promising dancer Rachel Priyanka Perris showcased Classical Gaudiya Nritya at the programme.
Rachel, a lecturer at the Department of Dance, University of Dhaka, Set off the event with performing Doshomahavidya beautifully showcasing 10 forms of Mahavidya through her impeccable dance mudra. She depicted the apt expression of Kali, Tara, Bhubaneshwari, Shoroshi, Bhairavi, Chhinnamasta, Dhumabati, Matangi, Bogola and Kamola in unique styles.
Depicting the grace and glamour of Gaudiya Nritya, the artiste later immersed in a speedy yet immaculate throwing of mudra, expressions and emotion while acting out Rakkhushi Putona, who falls dead to kill Krishna with order from Kangsa.
Priyanka Gope, an Assistant Professor at the Department of Music, University of Dhaka, started off with rendering a khayal based on Raga Puriya, a major hexatonic raga of Hindustani Classical Music. Priyanka mesmerised the audience with her speedy akar and sargam taan together with sweet ragdari and murki-based presentation. Talented tabla artiste Debashis Das Apurbo accompanied the vocalist playing vilambit ektaal and teental. The vocalist later soulfully presented a Bhairavi thumri “Baju Band Khul Khul Jaye” on jat taal.
Swani Zubayeer, a disciple of Ustad Mazhar Ali Khan and Ustad Jawad Ali Khan both are the grandsons of legendary thumri maestro Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, took the stage to wrap up the soiree. The singer performed four thumris, composed by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. Starting off with a Manj Khamaj thumri “Prem Agan Jiara”, Swani next continued on rendering a Tilakkamod piece “Tan Man Dhan Tope Varun” and a Pilu genre “Saiyan Bolo Tanak Mose”. The artiste wrapped up the soiree with singing a popular thumri “Ka Karu Sajni Aaye Na Balam”, based on Raga Jangla Bhairavi.
