3,770 killed in road crashes in 6 months
At least 3,770 people have been killed in road accidents in the first half of the year, according to a report yesterday.
A total of 10,278 people were injured, while 923 were maimed for life, it added.
Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh prepared the report collecting data from eight national and local newspapers. The organisation presented their findings at a press conference at Jatiya Press Club.
“Reckless driving, jaywalking, unfit vehicles, and talking over the phone while driving are the main reasons behind the frequent mishaps,” said Mozammel Haque Chowdhury, secretary general of the organisation.
“The road accidents are tantamount to deliberate killings that go unabated,” he observed.
Reading out a key paper, he suggested organising professional trainings for drivers and evicting all makeshift stalls beside highways.
