18 Jamaat, Shibir men held in Rangpur
At least 18 leaders and activist of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, were detained in Rangpur last night on charge of planning subversive activities during the party’s countrywide demonstration programme today.
Police conducted special drives at different locations in eight upazilas of the district and arrested the activists, said Shariful Alam, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Detective Branch (DB) police in Rangpur.
Jamaat through a media release yesterday announced that it will stage demonstrations across the country today demanding release of its leaders who are facing charges of committing crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, the law enforcers also arrested 57 more people from the upazilas as they are fugitive accused in different cases, the SI added. However, their political identities could not be known immediately.
