Youth to die, another gets life for killing

A court in Sirajganj yesterday sentenced a young man to death and another to life term imprisonment for killing a fish trader in 2009.

The condemned convict was identified as Mansur Ali, 30, son of late Kalachand of  Aghabaria village in Ullapara upazila while the lifer as Shahidul, 32, son of Abdul Majid of Dariapur Khapara village in Shahjadpur upazila. The court also fined them TK 20,000 each, reports UNB.

According to the prosecution, Abdul Kuddus Bepari, 45, of Dariapur village in  Sahjadpur upazila went missing on November 4, 2009. Later, he was found dead on a field at Laxmipur village in Ullapara upazila on November 7, 2009.

Wife of the deceased, Bulbuli, filed a case against three people.

After examining records and witnesses, additional district and sessions' judge-2 Fazle Khoda Mohammad Nazir handed down the verdict, acquitting another accused.

In Jessore, Benapole port police detained Liton Hossein, 26, a fugitive double-murder convict, also a listed criminal of Benapole, on Tuesday night from Benapole Bazar, reports our Benapole correspondent.

Apurbo Hasan, officer in-charge (OC) of Benapole Port PS said, Liton faces many cases including for murder, arms peddling and extortions.
