Woman, son killed
Police last night detained a husband on suspicion of killing his wife and their young son in the city's Mirpur.
The victims are Irin Akter Arzu, 35, and Sabbid, 7.
“Our primary suspect is the husband. The couple's relations turned sour lately, following the husband's extramarital affair,” said Salauddin Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station.
The husband, Amanullah, 45, probably strangled Irin first and then Sabbid apparently to get rid of the witness of his crime, the OC added.
An officer at Pubali bank's Elephant Road branch, Amanullah was in his Maddho Paikpara house for an hour from 5:20pm before going out with Sabbid.
The building's security guard, Abul Quashem, saw Amanullah leaving with the child after Magrib prayers, the police officer said.
“Earlier, sir [Amanullah] entered the house before Magrib prayers. I saw nobody entering the house after him,” Quasem told The Daily Star.
But he could not say when Aman came back with Sabbid.
Sultan Munsi, a neighbour, said he went to Aman's flat after hearing Aman scream.
“I found the lady and the son [Sabbid] lying on the bed,” said Sultan.
He added the couple's one-year-old son was crying sitting by Irin's head.
Aman claimed to police that he found the house locked from outside and upon entering he found his wife and Sabbid lying on the bed.
Irin's elder sister Nigar Sultana Akhi said Irin had paid her a visit around 11:00am when she looked anxious.
Akhi, who lives in the adjacent Dakkhin Paikpara neighborhood, said Irin had told her that Aman had been threatening her with life.
“What will happen to my babies if I die? I will soon leave for Panchagar and stay with my parents in our village home,” Akhi quoted her sister as telling her.
Akhi said the woman Aman developed extra-marital relations with shared a room with Irin when she studied at Eden College for her master's degree.
Irin was introduced to Aman by the woman.
Akhi claimed Aman deserted the woman, after being charmed by the beauty of her sister. But lately, he started communicating with the woman again, setting off the row with his wife.
Irin's uncle Yunus Hawlader said Aman had been beating his niece for the last one and half a years.
The couple tied the knot about a decade ago following a love affair.
