Three to testify for Subhan
Changing their earlier stance, the defence of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdus Subhan yesterday said they would produce just three witnesses to defend their client against the charges of crimes against humanity and genocide committed in Pabna during the liberation war.
Earlier, the defence submitted a list of 20 defence witnesses, and the prosecution filed an application for limiting the number.
But, when the International Crimes Tribunal-2 was hearing the prosecution petition yesterday, Subhan's counsel Mizanul Islam said they would produce three witnesses, instead of 20, leading the prosecution to withdraw their petition.
Lawyers of war crimes accused Jamaat leaders usually submit a long list of defence witnesses--a list of over 10,000 was submitted in the case against Jamaat ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami--and on every occasion, the tribunals limit the number following the prosecution's petitions.
Meanwhile, the three-member tribunal led by Justice Obaidul Hassan rejected two defence petitions--one seeking its permission to submit some documents and the other praying to allow Subhan to place his submission in person before the court.
The tribunal also rejected a prosecution petition to change a date of the offence mentioned in the indictment order.
The court is scheduled to record the testimony of the last prosecution witness in the case today.
