That perfect panjabi
EID is the time for men of all ages to dress up in panjanbis, a much preferred outfit and since they are not just of the traditional type anymore, here is what to look out for.
It is important to take a few considerations into account while choosing the material for your panjabi. It is hot and sunny out here with unexpected rainfall every now and then. While synthetic might be the fabric of your choice, it can leave you without room for your skin to breathe.
The high humidity leaves us sweaty and it is important to let air pass through clothes to feel fresh and avoid body odour. Cotton is undoubtedly the way to go this summer. Look out for white, cotton panjabis which are extremely light and best suited for men with lean and/or well-built bodies.
Solid colours, preferably light ones, are good options for men of all ages and sizes. Avoid black and stick to summer-friendly colours -- sky blue, yellow, green, etc.
Keep the occasion in mind when you pick your design. Moderation is perfection this Eid. Your options are hand and machine crafted embellishments and prints.
Aarong, Deshi Dosh and the Elephant Road market have a wide range of handcrafted panjabis. If you like stripes and checks, Shatabdi, located at Plaza A.R. in Dhanmondi has a fine range of panjabis at a reasonable price and they are also available in a variety of colours and sizes, suitable for men with any body type.
As already mentioned, panjabis are not just of the traditional type anymore, which only means more varieties for the fashion-conscious male. Short casual panjabis, kablis and denim panjabis are some of the available options.
Short panjabis are particularly well suited for the thin and the lean while the long ones are for their taller counterparts. Denim panjabis are the new 'in' thing -- spend a good few minutes in the trial room with these before you make up your mind.
Lastly, to go with your panjabi, pick the appropriate pair of trousers. Not all panjabis go well with jeans (if that's your usual preference). Payjamas are indeed more summer friendly and of course, that's the way it was meant to be. Payjamas are available at any place where panjabis are sold. A good pair will cost around Tk.650 or so.
Let tradition lead the way this Eid. Panjabi is a tested statement and this Eid renew that bond of style with tradition.
