India wants to launch its own national web browser

The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY) of India recently launched an open competition to build the country's first national web browser. Called Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC), the contest aims to encourage tech enthusiasts and developers of India to build an indigenous web browser.

As per reports, the IWBDC intends to bring forward an internet browser that has its trust store with an in-built CCA India root certificate. Additionally, this web browser is intended to be safe to use, packing updated data privacy features and modern functionalities. The competition officially began on August 9.

According to reports, the proposed browser will focus on accessibility and user-friendly features, especially ensuring in-built support for diverse individuals. This browser should also have the ability to digitally sign documents using a crypto token - a feature that the ministry feels would help improve the country's digital transaction system.
