Parliament passes silk development bill

“Bangladesh Silk Development Board Bill, 2013” was passed in the Jatiya Sangsad yesterday with a provision to constitute Bangladesh Silk Development Board integrating the Bangladesh Silk Board, Bangladesh Silk Research and Training Institute and Bangladesh Silk Foundation to ensure a quick development of this sector.
Textiles and Jute Minister Abdul Latif Siddique piloted the bill in the House for passage.
Earlier on February 27, the report of the parliamentary standing committee on the bill was placed in the Jatiya Sangsad.
Meanwhile, Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen yesterday placed “Bangladesh Water Bill, 2013” in the Jatiya Sangsad to ensure proper use of the water resources.

Army withdrawn from Bogra

Two platoons of army men deployed in Shahjahanpur upazila of Bogra yesterday morning to help the administration maintain the law and order following escalating violence were withdrawn in the evening.
The army men were withdrawn from Shahjahanpur area near the Bogra Cantonment at 6:00pm as the area returned to normalcy, said an ISPR release.
Earlier, the army personnel were deployed in Shahjahanpur upazila from 9:00am to help the civil administration maintain the law and order.

Ctg Gonojagoron Mancha protests hartal

People of the port city yesterday again thronged the sit-in, Gonojagoron Mancha, before Chittagong Press Club protesting the two-day dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami.
A mass signature collection campaign was underway at the venue, supporting the six-point demand, including banning of Jamaat and Jamaat backed Islami Chhatra Shibir, and demanding death penalty for all war criminals.
People from all walks of life started joining the demonstration, initiated by Samprodayikota Birodhi Torun Udjog, Chittagong; from 3:00pm and kept it lively with slogans and patriotic songs.

Ex-BCL leader killed in Sylhet

A former leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was killed and another injured by miscreants in Sylhet city's Akhalia Tapobon Residential area on Saturday night.
The deceased was Jagotjhoty Talukder, former president of Madan Mohon College unit BCL, and resident of Akhaliaghat in the city.
Quoting witnesses, police said a gang of miscreants swooped on Taluker and Sylhet city unit BCL activist Jewel when they were returning home, leaving them injured around 9:30pm.
The attackers also set the victim's private car on fire.
The injured were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital where Talukder died.
