Sherin grapples to fourth
Wrestler Sherin Sultana had to be content with a fourth-place finish at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games after suffering a 4-0 defeat to India's Divya Kakran in the bronze-medal deciding match of the 68kg weight category freestyle wrestling event at the Carrara Sports Arena yesterday.
The 29-year-old started her campaign with a straightforward 8-3 victory over Kenya's Lilian Nthiga before losing 0-6 to eventual gold medallist Blessing Oborududu in the group phase.
With one win and one defeat, Sherin advanced to the semifinal where she was beaten by eventual silver medallist, Canada's Danielle Lappage, to set up a bronze-medal deciding match against Divya.
Though Sherin had reached the medal-deciding match, shooters Sharmin Shilpa and Suriya Akter did not fare quite as well, being eliminated from the qualification round in the women's 50m rifle three positions after finishing 12th and 13th out of 16 participants. Sharmin and Suriya scored 570 each.
