Bald head or football? AI camera could not tell the difference
In a bizarre incident during a football match in Scotland, an artificial intelligence (AI) camera mistook the bald head of the referee for the match ball as it kept tracking the linesman's bald head for the most part of the game.
The video of the hilarious blunder has been going viral on social media since the unprecedented event.
It happened during a match between Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Ayr United hosted in Inverness in the distant Scottish Highlands at the Caledonian Stadium. The commentator had to apologise repeatedly during the course of the game as the AI camera kept mistaking the linesman's head for the ball.
Everything is terrible. Here's a football match last weekend that was ruined after the AI cameraman kept mistaking the linesman's bald head for a football.https://t.co/BsoQFqEHu0 pic.twitter.com/GC9z9L8wHf; James Felton (@JimMFelton) October 29, 2020
The Inverness Club relied on the AI camera to live stream the game as they refrained from using human-operated cameras due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, the AI camera could not differentiate between the two as it kept following the referee's bald head throughout the game.
The AI camera company had assured fans that the gaffe won't be repeated as the football match ended in a 1-1 draw. Fans took to social media to question the camera company about the hilarious goof-up that marred the viewer experience.
"We are aware of the issue with linesman and we are already working on improving this for the next game. We hope that this will not happen again and that your viewing experience will be better. Thank you," the company said in a statement.
