Journos appeased
Journalists covering the Bangabandhu Gold Cup yesterday withdrew their program to boycott the eight-team tournament after local administration assured them of taking proper measures on the activists of Bangabandhu Sainik League, who had assaulted journalists on Friday night.
After the assurance from lawmaker Kazi Nabil Ahmed and Jessore deputy commissioner Humayun Kabir at the city's Press Club yesterday noon, the journalists withdrew their program and later covered the match between Malaysia XI and Nepal.
Nabil, also a vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation, apologised to the journalists on behalf of the residents of Jessore.
“It was a shameful incident for the residents of Jessore and I apologise for the unwanted incident. Whoever did this are terrorists. They have no political identity and there will be no favour for them. I believe the administration will bring them under law immediately,” said Nabil.
Our Benapole correspondent adds, local law enforcers sealed off the office of the Bangabandhu Sainik League yesterday after recovering 10 sticks, seven iron rods, four boxes [for making bombs], an iron pipe and a bicycle chain from the party office.
