Karunaratne ton propels SL to 6-wicket win
Skipper Dimuth Karunaratne scored 122 off 243 balls as hosts Sri Lanka eased to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test in Galle today.
Chasing a victory target of 268, the islanders started the day on 133 for naught, but lost Lahiru Thirimanne for 64 before losing Kusal Mendis for 10. However, Karunaratne held firm to pick up his hundred, and by the time he got out, Sri Lanka were cruising.
Former skipper Angelo Mathews (28 not out) and Dhananjaya de Silva (14 not out) saw the home side to victory just before scheduled lunch time.
The second and final Test will begin in Colombo on August 22.
