26 crude bombs recovered

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) recovered 26 crude bombs from Chowdhury intersection of Maharajpur in Sadar upazila early yesterday. Major Kamruzzaman Pavel, commanding officer of Chapainawabganj Rab-5, said on secret information, a team of the elite force raided the area at about 4:30am and recovered the 26 crude bombs in an abandoned condition. The recovered crude bombs were later handed over to Sadar Police Station.
Missing man's body found

Police recovered decomposed body of a man from a septic tank of his house in Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar district on Tuesday night, 40 days after he had 'gone missing.' The deceased was identified as Ayub Ali, 58, of Mansur village in the upazila. Sub-inspector Kazi Shahed of Kulaura Police Station said, Ayub had remained missing since September 5. Informed by locals, a team of police recovered the body of Ayub Ali from a septic tank of his house at about 7:30m. Police also arrested Jalil Rahman, 28, son of late Ayub Ali, on suspicion of his involvement in the incident.
18 Shibir men arrested

Police arrested 18 leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir from an abandoned house in Tantkura area in Gouripur upazila here yesterday afternoon. The arrestees include Billal Hossain and Aminul Islam, president and secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir Gouripur upazila unit, police said. On information, police raided the area and arrested the Shibir men while they were holding a secret meeting at the house around 5.30pm, said Mohammad Ali Sheikh, officer in-charge of Gouripur Police Station. Police also recovered party leaflets and jihadi books from their possession.
Shanty eviction plan protested

Hundreds of slum dwellers yesterday staged a demonstration against Bangladesh Railway (BR) plan to bulldoze Lalbag-Sultannagar slum, locally known as Churipatti in Lalbag area of the city. They staged sit in and held rally in front of Sultannagar slum from 7:00am-2:00pm. The slum dwellers also brought out a protest procession from the slum and paraded the main streets of the city. Sultannagar Rail Bosti Rokkha Sangram Committee organised the programmes. Expressing solidarity with the protesters, Rangpur district unit of Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD) convention preparation committee, Rickshaw Shromik Union, teachers, students participated in the programmes. The speakers said BR issued a notice to evict about 500 families living in the slum by Wednesday. They said the High Court (HC) had passed an order not to evict the slum without taking rehabilitation plan for its dwellers.
Transport workers turn unruly

At least 10 people were injured as the transport workers went unruly at the Upazila Parishad complex in Jaintapur yesterday afternoon. Eyewitnesses and police said, over a thousand transport workers, under the banner of Darbast Ema Leguna Sramik Union, gathered at the upazila complex to protest the killing of human hauler driver Zainal Abedin. They pelted stones and brickbats as the police asked them to hold the rally peacefully. They also vandalised 20 windowpanes and physically assaulted a staff at the UNO's office. Sub-inspector Jayonta Kumar Dey said, 10 people including a sub-inspector sustained minor injuries and took first aid at the upazila health complex. Officer in-charge of Jaintapur police station Harun Or Rashid Chowdhury said, the workers went to hand over a memorandum to the UNO. But seeing police at the complex, they all on a sudden turned unruly.
