35 rescued from traffickers

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) yesterday rescued 35 people, including 12 women, six children and 17 men while they were being trafficked to India through Putkhali Border under Benapole Port Police Station. Farid Uddin, Putkhali camp in-charge of BGB-23 Battalion, on secret information, a team raided the border area and rescued the victims. However, the traffickers managed to flee, sensing the presence of the border guards, he said. The victims hailed from Narail and Faridpur districts, said Farid, adding that they were later handed over to the police station. A case was filed in connection with the incident, he said.
11 idols vandalised

Criminals vandalised 11 idols of Hindu goddesses and gods at five temples in Batrish area of the district town on Wednesday night ahead of the Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of the country's Hindu community. A gang damaged heads and hands of four of goddess Durga, two of god Ganesh, two of god Kartik and other three idols of different temples at midnight, said locals. Bijoy Krisna Roy, president of Kishoreganj Puja Udjapon Parishad, demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the culprits. SP Md Anwar Hossain Khan, Deputy Commissioner SM Alam and UNO Subroto Kumer Paul visited the spot.
16 houses gutted

At least 16 houses were gutted in a fire at Guchhagram in Khansama upazila yesterday afternoon. Witnesses said the fire originated at the kitchen of one Md Delwar Hossain and soon engulfed the adjoining houses. On information, firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze with the help of locals. The affected house owners claimed that the loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 12.7 lakh.
Son kills father

A man was killed allegedly by his son following a family feud at Dharmadah village in Daulatpur upazila yesterday. The dead is Lyakat Ali, 50, of the village. Enamul Haq, officer in-charge of Daulatpur police station, said Lyakat's son Ekhlas, 25, hit him with a sharp weapon in the head, leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to Kushtia Medical College and Hospital where he died in the afternoon. Ekhlas went into hiding after the incident, said the OC.
Fake dentist jailed

A mobile court here on Wednesday sentenced a fake dentist to six months' imprisonment. The court, led by executive magistrate Md Mijanur Rahman, raided Shapla intersection area in the town at 12:30pm and arrested Ershadul Islam, 48, in his chamber named 'Dantoghar'. At that time, Ershadul could not show any legal papers to the mobile court in support of giving medical treatment. He had been giving treatment for long in the area as a dentist, said the court sources.
Illegal ice cream factory fined

A mobile court fined an illegal ice cream factory at Ranipur village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday. The court, led by executive magistrate HM Salahuddin Manju, fined Rony ice cream factory Tk 40,000 for not having license from Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI). It also destroyed sub-standard ice cream of the factory worth Tk 50,000. In Kawkhali upazila town, executive magistrate Sheikh Rasheduzzaman fined two cloth shops Tk 2,000 in the evening for not having trade license.
