Forest robber held with arms

Detective Branch (DB) of Police in Khulna arrested an alleged forest robber from Tolna area in Dumuria upazila early yesterday. The arrestee is Mujibor Gazi, 40, son of Tokim Gazi of Goroikhali village in Paikgachha upazila. Inspector Rokonurzzaman, in-charge of DB police in Khulna, said on secret information, a team led by Sub-inspector Mukto Roy raided the area around 3:30am and arrested Mujibor along with a country-made gun and five bullets. The arrestee is a member of a notorious gang that had been committing robberies in the Sundarbans and its adjacent areas for long, said the inspector.
College student electrocuted

A college boy was electrocuted at Taraganj village in Lalmohan upazila early yesterday. The deceased Naziur Rahaman Monju, 21, son of Ruhul Amin of the village, was a BA (second year) student at Shahbazpur Govt College. Shah Jalal, sub-inspector of Lalmohan Police Station, quoted father of the deceased as saying that Monju came in contact with a live wire while he was trying to repair a snapped electric line at their house around 5:30am. He was rushed to Lalmohan Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.
Woman killed in land dispute

A woman was killed and at least 10 others were injured when two rival groups clashed allegedly over the ownership of a disputed land at Kartikpasha village in Dumki upazila yesterday. The deceased is Hasina Begum, 35. Police said, there had been a long standing rivalry between two neighbours Abdur Rahim and Sobhan Sikdar of the village over the ownership of a disputed land. The clash ensued around 11:00am, when Sobhan's men entered into the disputed land forcibly and Rahim's men tried to drove them out that left 11 people injured. The injured were rushed to Patuakhali General Hospital, where doctors declared Hasina dead.
5 cops hurt in 'gunfight'

At least five policemen were bullet-injured in a “gunfight” between the law enforcers and a gang of armed robbers in Kaliajuri area of the town on Tuesday night. Police, however, arrested one Roman along with a foreign-made pistol and five bullets from the spot. Humayun Kabir, officer in-charge of Detective Branch (DB) of Police in Comilla, said as part of the ongoing anti-crime drive, a team of DB police raided the area around 9:00pm. Sensing presence of the law-enforcers, the armed gang opened fire prompting the policemen to retaliate, triggering a gun fight, that left five policemen bullet-hit, the OC said. Of the injured, three sub-inspectors of DB police-- Shah Kamal Akand, Shahidul Islam and Alimuzzaman were admitted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
