Sand-laden boat sinks, 3 die

Three workers died as a sand-laden trawler capsized in the Surma River in Sadar upazila early yesterday. The deceased were identified as Jamir Uddin, 26, son of Mollik Mia, Foyzullah, 30, son of Abdul Kaiyum, and Shimul, 25, son of late Abdus Salam of Sreepur village in Sadar upazila. Police said the sand-laden trawler carrying six workers started for Weskhali from Dhopazan area of the upazila around 4:00am. When the trawler reached Mollikpur area, it capsized in the Surma River due to strong current amid heavy rainfall around 5:30am. Three workers out of the six on board the vessel managed to swim ashore. On information, a rescue team rushed to the spot and recovered three bodies after a frantic search in the river.

Teenager jailed in Thakurgaon

A mobile court yesterday sentenced a teenage boy to 10 days' imprisonment for circulating obscene photographs of a schoolgirl through his mobile phone. Led by Executive Magistrate Abdul Momen, the court convicted Sohag Islam, 18, son of Sirajul Islam of Boro Balia village in Sadar upazila of the district.  Police said Sohag took some obscene photographs of a class VI student of a local high school a few days ago and circulated it to other mobile phones in the area.

Housewife murdered
Unb, Satkhira

Police recovered the body of a housewife from Masiara village in Tala upazila of the district yesterday. The deceased is Lavly Khatun, 32, wife of Abdul Hamid of the village. Motiur Rahman, officer in-charge of Tala Police Station, said locals spotted Lavly's body at a garden in Ghora Bottala area of the village around 11:00am and informed police. Miscreants might have hacked Lavly to death, but the reason behind the killing could not be ascertained immediately, the OC said.
