36 BNP men sent to jail in Jessore

A district court on Sunday sent to jail 36 BNP leaders and activists in a case for violence in Sadar upazila in November last year. Judge of the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court, Benapole, Maruf Ahmed passed the order when the BNP men surrendered before the court, seeking bail in the case. According to the case statement, some BNP leaders and activists torched several shops and vehicles after vandalising those and blasted bombs at Churamankathi Bazar in Sadar upazila on November 27, 2013. In connection with the incident, Faruque Hossain and Alam of the area filed the case against 45 people with Jessore Kotwali Police Station.

Muggers shoot 2, loot Tk 1 lakh

Muggers looted Tk one lakh shooting two staff of the district office of Grameenphone on Park Road in the district town yesterday. The injured are Asek Hasan Pallab, 35, distributor of the office, and Shawkat Hossain, 55, security guard of the same office. Quoting witnesses, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station Rajiur Rahman said Muggers shot Shawkat and Pallab when they were entering the district branch of National Bank to deposit Tk one lakh in cash there around 11:45am. Critically injured, Shawkat was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

Two houses gutted

At least two houses were gutted in a fire in Agabari area of Chatak upazila town in Sunamganj district yesterday. Locals said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at a house and soon engulfed the adjoining dwelling. On information, fire fighters from Chatak fire service station rushed to the spot and doused the blaze after one and a half hours of frantic efforts, said Shamsujamman Pir, team leader of the station. The loss caused by the fire could go up to Tk 8 lakh, he said.
