Man beaten to death

An elderly man was beaten to death allegedly by his nephew over land dispute in Ishwardi upzila of the district yesterday. The dead is Md Hafizur Rahman Khan, 75, of Golbthan Purbapara village in the upazila. Officer in-charge of Ishwardi police station Biman Kumar Das said Mizanur Rahman Ritu, 33, beat up his uncle Hafizur, leaving him seriously injured following an altercation over the land on Monday night. He was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital where he died yesterday afternoon.
One killed in mud collapse

An unidentified man, aged about 34, was killed and another injured in a mud collapse at a brickfield under Parbatipur upazila yesterday. The injured was identified as Anisur Rahman, 30, son of Hazrat Ali of Pashchim Sherpur-Telipara in the upazila. The victims were rushed to the upazila health complex where the unidentified man died.
Hartal in Rangpur today

Rangpur district BNP and its front organisations will enforce a half-day hartal in the district today, demanding immediate release of Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, president of Swechchhasebok Dal. The shutdown will start at 6:00am, said party sources. On April 6, Sohel was sent to jail as courts rejected his bail petitions in 11 cases for violence, bomb blasts, arson attacks and obstructing police from performing their duties. The leaders of the party also threatened to go for a tougher movement if their demand was not met immediately.
Student commits 'suicide'
Unb, Laxmipur
Police recovered the body of a madrasa boy from Tewariganj Bazar in Sadar upazila on Monday midnight. The deceased is Abdur Rashid, a class XI student of Charmatua Madrasa and son of Abul Kashem of Koshba village in the upazila. Rashid was also a moazzin of Chowdhury Bari Jam-e-Mosque in the village. Police and locals said local people spotted the body of Rashid hanging with the ceiling at Forkania Madrasa beside the mosque around 12:00am and informed the police.
Human trafficker arrested

Police arrested a man on charge of trafficking a girl at Chandanpat village in Aditmari upazila on Monday noon. The arrestee is Yusuf Ali, 42, son of late Abdul Motaleb of the village. Police said Yusuf trafficked the girl of the area in the name of giving household work in Dhaka six months back. The girl was later sold at a brothel house in Narayanganj, said family members. On Sunday night, the victim escaped from the brothel and filed a case with Aditmari police station accusing Usuf, said SI Shamiul Islam.
Man found dead

A 70-year-old man was found dead at a bamboo cluster in Parbatipur upazila on Monday. The dead is Avoy Chandra Sarker, of Asurkot village in the upazila. He went out of home on Sunday and did not return since. Locals found his hanging body in the cluster and informed the police. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy. The reason behind the death could not be known immediately, said police.
