Idol vandalised

Criminals vandalised an idol of Hindu goddess at temple at Nagbati village in Shyamnagar upazila on Friday. Bamal Mitra, secretary of the temple committee, said a gang damaged the idol at night and left it some 50 to 60 yards away from the temple. Recently a feud took place between two locals over the land of the temple, he said. Officer in-charge Sagir Miah of Shyamnagar police station, said dispute over the land might have been the reason behind the attack.
10 hurt in JCD-cops clash

At least 10 people, including two policemen, were injured in a clash between the activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and the law enforcers in Sirajganj district town yesterday. Earlier in the day, the activists of JCD district unit hurled brick chips at police from a procession brought out demanding release of party leader Md Abdul Alim arrested five days back, prompting the clash. They fired 40 bullets and tear shells to disperse the unruly JCD men, said Md Habibul Islam, officer in-charge of Sirajganj Sadar police station. On March 25, Alim was arrested on charge of torching a train, said the OC.
Rival groups clash

At least five people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over a trivial matter at Joradah village in Horinakundu upazila yesterday morning. The injured are Azizur Rahman, Arif Hossain Zantu, Somir Saha, Jomir Saha and Nazir Saha. They were admitted to the upazila health complex and different clinics. The clash took place over driving a bullock cart through a wheat field, said Mahibul Islam, OC of Horinakundu police station.
Housewife killed

Police yesterday arrested a man on charge of killing his wife at Bhelabari village in Aditmari upazila. The deceased is Foara Begum, 19, wife of Samidul Islam of the village. Earlier in the day, Samidul beat up Foara, leaving her dead on the spot following an altercation over family matter, said police and locals. The body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.
Missing boy found dead

Police recovered the body of a missing schoolboy from the washroom of a local school in Debhata upazila on Friday evening. The deceased is Foysal Al Hasan, 11, a class IV student of Nalta Primary School and son of Abul Hossain Raju of Debishohor village in the upazila. Locals spotted the body of Foysal in the washroom of Sakhipur High
School in the evening and informed police who recovered the body. The body bore injury marks in the neck. Kazi Jalaluddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata police station, said Foysal had gone missing at about 9:00 am on Friday. Miscreants strangled the boy and dumped the body in the school's washroom, suspected the OC.
Man held with arms

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a young man along with a pistol and seven bullets from a bus at Hatikumrul intersection in Salanga upazila early yesterday. The arrestee is Billal Hossain, 28, son of Abul Hossain, a resident of Jatrabari area in Dhaka. Rab-12 sources said on secret information, a team intercepted a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Hanif Paribahan' from Dinajpur in the area and arrested Billal along with the arms and bullets.
Woman strangled

Police recovered the body of an unidentified woman from Lebutala village in Sadar upazila on Friday. Police said locals spotted the body of the woman aged around 35 from a garden of one Altaf Hossain of the village in the evening and informed police. The body was sent to hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police suspected that criminals kidnapped the woman and later strangled her.
Youth jailed for stalking

A mobile court sentenced a youth to two months' imprisonment for stalking a schoolgirl in Birampur upazila yesterday. The court also fined him Tk 3,000. The convict is Md Tourit Zaman Sabuj, 22, son of Md Belayet Hossain of Monirampur village in the upazila. Police said that Sabuj used to stalk the girl on her way to school. On information, locals yesterday morning caught the youth and handed him over to police.
Fugitive arrested

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a fugitive accused along with a gun and four kilograms gunpowder at Sarkarer intersection in Shibganj upazila yesterday. The arrestee is Toufiqul Islam, 30, son of late Sultan Mondal of Kamlakantapur village in the upazila. On secret information, a team of Rab-5 from Chapainawabganj camp raided the area and arrested Toufiqul along with the firearm. Toufiqul was accused in 11 cases including one for murder, said Lt Hamid, commander of the camp.
