A Bit of Fry & Laurie (1989 – 1995)
A Bit of Fry & Laurie is a British sketch comedy series that ran from January 13, 1989 to April 2, 1995. The television comedy was written by and starred Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. The show ran for four seasons and had a total of 26 episodes, including a pilot episode spanning 36-minute in 1987.
The show included interviews with members of the public, often making irrelevant statements, profoundly based on wordplay. In addition, Laurie and Fry were also seen playing piano and various other musical instruments and singing comical tunes. What made this show really unique was its frequent breaking of the fourth wall, meaning that the characters would go back to their real-life characters, or the camera would pan off set into the studio often. The elaborate wordplay and innuendo were the main staples of the show.
The show was popular for commenting on current issues of the day. This included making jokes at prime ministers that included the likes of John Major and Margaret Thatcher. Even though the show consisted of one-time circumstances and sketches, there were few characters that appeared over several episodes.
The show was very well received by the audience; as a result, the first season of the show including the pilot was released on DVD on April 3, 2006. Consequently, season 2 was released on June 12 and season 3 and 4 on October 30.
The show is a must-watch for people who enjoy satirical and sketch comedy, and does not mind the inclusion of heavy wordplay to further embellish the comedy.
