Shirin 45th, Mezbah 63rd
Bangladesh's fastest sprinter Mezbah Ahmed finished in 63rd among 76 contestants in the 100m sprint of the 20th Commonwealth Games at the Hampden Park Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday. Mezbah, a former BKSP student who became the fastest man of the country last year by finishing his race in 10.75 second (hand timing), took 11.13 seconds to finish his heat yesterday.
The fastest qualifier was Adam Gemili of England (10.15 sec) while the sixteenth and last qualifier was Adam Harris of Guyana (10.45sec).
Bangladesh's female sprinter Shirin Akter became 45th out of 46 starters in the women's 100m sprint at the same venue later in the day. Shirin finished her race at 12.87 seconds, with Nigeria's Blessing Okagbare finishing first in the qualification at a time of 11.20 seconds.
Meanwhile, Bangladeshi swimmer Mahfuza Khatun finished 35th among 38 competitors in the 100m Breaststroke event. Mahfuza clocked 1 minute 22:62 seconds to finish her swim. 16 swimmers qualified for the final round, with the sixteenth finishing the swim in 1 minute 10:90 seconds.
