Sheikh Russel win, MSC slip to 4th
Holders Sheikh Russel KC notched their first win in four matches when they came from behind to beat Mohammedan SC 2-1 in their Nitol Tata Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Wahed Ahmed provided Mohammedan a 20-minute lead before Mithun Chowdhury cancelled it on the half-hour mark and ensured Sheikh Russel's eighth win by striking his 13th goal of the league seven minutes into the second half.
Despite two successive league wins over Mohammedan, Sheikh Russel remain in sixth position with 32 points from 24 matches. Mohammedan slipped to fourth position with 38 points from 24 outings as Muktijoddha Sangsad notched a lone-goal win over hosts Chittagong Abahani to grab the third position with 40 points.
Chittagong Abahani, on the other hand, remained at eighth spot with 22 points from 24 matches.
Back to the match, favourites Mohammedan came into the game on the back of three successive draws against BJMC, Abahani and Sheikh Jamal DC and the Black and Whites got off to a fine start before taking a deserved lead in the 20th minute through Wahed Ahmed, who side-volleyed a Yousuf Sifat free-kick home to raise his goals tally to 13.
But Sheikh Russel, playing without foreign players, bit back with a counter-attack as Fazle Rabbin entered the box from the right to drive a low shot which was blocked by a defender before Mithun rounded off to hammer the rebound home from close in the 30th minute.
After resumption, Mithun placed a Mohammad Sumon cross home to make it 2-1 in the 52nd minute. Wahed found a good opportunity to equalise four minutes later but the tall striker deposited the ball in the hands of Sheikh Russel goalkeeper Biplob Bhattacharjee.
In the dying moments, Wahed again saw his header go inches over the crosspiece.
Away at the MA Aziz Stadium, Muktijoddha Sangsad's Mohammad Ibrahim struck the all-important goal in the fifth minute and it was enough to see off Chitagong Abahani.
