RU BCL extorts money for iftar

Ruling Awami League-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League activists of a Rajshahi  University hall were allegedly extorting money from its residents to host an iftar party scheduled to be held today.
Meanwhile, a BCL leader of RU unit yesterday assaulted a female student on the campus for declining his unwanted amorous advances.
Students of Nawab Abdul Latif Hall alleged that some 10 to 12 BCL activists led by Mizanur Rahman were demanding Tk 50 from each of the students Sunday night.
Seeking anonymity, a student of the dorm said, "While I refused to give the money for the iftar party, they threatened us saying it is mandatory to join it, otherwise you will be punished." "As I refused to give the money, they had noted down my room number and addresses," he added.
Even, a Hindu student said, "I had been compelled to give the money as they threatened me."
Denying the allegation, BCL activist Mizanur Rahman said they did not force anyone rather the students were going to participate in the party voluntarily.
BCL General Secretary SM Tawhid Al Hossain alias Tuhin of RU unit told The Daily Star that they were looking into the matter.
Hall Provost Prof Biswanath Shikder said he was not aware about the matter.
He added that he would take steps after investigation.
BCL MAN ASSAULTS FEMALE STUDENT
A BCL leader of RU unit yesterday assaulted a female student on the campus for declining his unwanted amorous advances.
The victim said Obaidul Haque Kayes, BCL vice-president of RU unit and masters student of English department, halted her before the Deans' Complex and proposed the unwanted advances while she was going to her hall at 4:30pm.
"As I declined to the proposal, BCL leader Kayes slapped me across the face and I felt down on the ground," alleged the victim. Kayes has been stalking her for long, she added.
Hearing her scream, Sirajul Islam, assistant proctor of the university and also a teacher of the department, rescued her and took her to the department office.
Contacted, Obaidul Haque Kayes denied the allegation.
The victim in a written complaint to her department's chairman sought punishment of Kayes.
RU Proctor Prof Tarikul Hasan said they would take action against the responsible BCL leader after investigation into the matter.
