Prisoner 'commits suicide' in Ctg jail
A convicted prisoner died after allegedly attempting to commit suicide at Chittagong Central Jail Tuesday evening.
Jakir Hossain, 32, of Patiya upazila, was convicted and sentenced to 14-year imprisonment in a case in 2007.
He attempted to hang himself with a towel from the railing rafter of the stairs in the main jail building around 8:00pm, but other prisoners rescued him.
Critically injured, Jakir was rushed to the jail hospital and then shifted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital where he died around 9:30pm, said the jail authorities.
Meanwhile, Chittagong Central Jail authority yesterday suspended two jail guards -- Ziabul Islam and Mohammad Alamgir -- on charge of duty negligence during the incident, said Chhagir Miah, senior jail super.
They also decided to file a departmental case against two main jail guards -- Mohammad Hossain and Abdur Rashid -- in this connection, he added.
Two three-member probe committees were formed to investigate the matter.
