Polls on Mar 29
Elections to reserved seats for women in the 10th parliament will be held on March 29.
The last date for filing nominations is March 4. The nomination papers will be scrutinised on March 6, and March 12 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of nomination.
Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad announced the schedule at a press conference at the media centre of the Election Commission Secretariat yesterday.
Out of 50 seats reserved for women in the Jatiya Sangsad, the Awami League-led alliance will get 41, Jatiya Party six and the combine of independent candidates three.
The lawmakers elected directly will cast their votes between 8:00am and 4:00pm at the EC secretariat, said the CEC.
The AL-led alliance won 244 seats out of total 300 in the January 5 parliamentary elections, boycotted by the BNP and other opposition parties.
With the 41 reserved seats, the ruling alliance will have 285 seats out of 350 in parliament. Having won 34 parliamentary seats, the JP will claim six reserved seats taking the total number of their lawmakers to 40. Two political parties -- Bangladesh Tarikat Federation and Bangladesh Nationalist Front (BNF) that got two and one seat respectively -- will not get any reserved seat for women.
Besides, the EC is yet to publish the gazette declaring two MPs-elect from Jessore as members of parliament over the allegations against the duo's violating the electoral code of conduct, while Tangail-8 constituency fell vacant after its lawmaker died on January 20.
Meanwhile, the EC has deferred the March 23 date for the Tangail-8 by-polls till March 29.
The deferment was made as the law enforcers would be busy with elections to 93 upazila parishads slated for March 23, said the CEC.
Meanwhile, 565 nomination papers for chairman, 610 for vice chairman and 337 for woman vice chairman posts were submitted yesterday on the last day for submission of nominations for the fourth phase of elections to be held in 74 upazila parishads on March 31.
