The High Court today extended till October 23 its earlier order that granted bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in which she is currently serving five years jail term.

The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following a prayer moved by Khaleda's lawyers Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali seeking an extension of her bail.

Meanwhile, the HC bench today continued 24 days the hearing on the appeal filed by Khaleda Zia challenging the lower court verdict that sentenced her to five years imprisonment in the case.

After concluding today’s proceedings, the court fixed 10:30 am tomorrow for a further hearing on the appeal, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lawyer Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan told The Daily Star.

Following a bail petition filed by Khaleda, the High Court on March 12 this year granted four months bail to her in Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

The four-month High Court bail expired on July 12 this year. Then the court extended the bail for nine times.

A Dhaka court on February 8 this year convicted Khaleda Zia and sentenced her to five years imprisonment in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case.
