Jatiya Party says it has not lent support to AL or BNP mayoral candidates

Amid claims by the ruling Awami League camp that Jatiya Party has extended its support to AL mayoral contestant Rezaul Karim Chowdhury, JP today said the party didn't give support to either the AL or the BNP mayoral contestant.

In a press release, JP said, "This is to inform all concerned regarding the Chattogram City Corporation election that the Jatiya Party has not extended its support to any party."

JP participated in the last national election in 2018 under the banner of the AL-led grand alliance but decided to play the role of main opposition party in parliament after the election.

Asked, a JP leader said some AL leaders in the Chattogram were telling people that JP has extended its support to AL-nominated mayoral candidates which has created confusion among voters.

"In a bid to clarify our stance, we were bound to come up with the statement," the JP leader said wishing anonymity.
