Awami League candidate Golam Mostafa Ahmed was elected in the Gaibandha-1 by-election unofficially as he got 30,071 votes more than his nearest contestant.

Mostafa got 90,169 votes while Jatiya Party nominated candidate Barrister Shamim Haider Patwari obtained 60,100 in all 109 centres, said Returning Officer G M Shahtabuddin.

A total of 1,66,618 votes was cast which is equivalent to 49.97 percent of the total votes, reports our Gaibandha correspondent quoting the official.

Seven candidates are vying in the election in the constituency which fell vacant following the murder of ruling Awami League lawmaker Manzurul Islam Liton in December last year.

Starting at 8:00am, the voting continued till 4:00pm without any break.

Liton was killed after unknown assailants opened fire on him inside his home at Sundarganj upazila on December 31. The Election Commission (EC) announced the polls schedule on February 5.
