5 cases filed over BNP-cops clash
Police today filed five cases against BNP leaders and activists including BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel in connection with yesterday’s clash with law enforcers in Dhaka.
Four of the cases – arson, vandalism, preventing lawmen from discharging duties and attempt to murder – were filed with Shahbagh Police Station, said Abul Hasan, officer-in-charge of the police station.
Fifty-six BNP leaders and activists have been sued in three cases while 60 sued in another case filed with the police station, the police official said.
Besides, law enforcers filed another case with Ramna Police Station in connection with the clash, police said.
Meanwhile, 30 BNP leaders and activists including its Sports Secretary Aminul Islam were sent to jail after police produced them before a Dhaka court seeking 10-day remand prayer for each.
The hearing on the remand plea will be held on December 10.
Yesterday, agitated BNP men vandalised around 70 vehicles and torched a police motorbike in the city's High Court and Bangabazar areas yesterday after police foiled their bid to bring out a procession.
The opposition activists gathered at Doyel Chattar around 2:50pm to go to a special court at Bakshibazar that granted bail to BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in Zia orphanage and Zia charitable trust graft cases.
The BNP men clashed with law enforcers for around half an hour, leaving at least 25 people, including three cops, injured, said witnesses and police.
Commuters suffered delays as huge tailbacks were created on the roads in and around the HC area following the incident.
