Piash Karim's wake not at Shaheed Minar
Piash Karim's wake will be held at his Dhanmondi residence in the capital today at 10:00am, not on the previously announced Central Shaheed Minar premises, his cousin Iqbal Chowdhury told The Daily Star yesterday.
He said their decision came against the backdrop of some student organisations declaring to resist taking the body to Central Shaheed Minar for holding a wake alongside the Dhaka University authorities' denial of permission to the family to do so.
“We do not want to drag him into any controversy,” added Iqbal.
Meanwhile a Supreme Court lawyer, Eunus Ali Akond, filed a writ petition with the High Court as public interest litigation seeking its directive on the government and DU authorities to allow holding the wake at Central Shaheed Minar.
The petition said every citizen of Bangladesh was equal in the eyes of law and was entitled to have recourse to it as per the constitution.
He told The Daily Star that the HC may hold the hearing on Sunday.
Moreover a BNP press release announced observing a countrywide day of mourning today at the “premature death”, hoisting black flags at party offices, keeping the party flag half mast and wearing black badges.
In another press release, Nagorik Samaj said the permission denial was “politically motivated”.
