5 cops among 7 sued

A case was filed yesterday against seven people including five policemen in connection with rape of a class IX student and her subsequent suicide on September 14 in Habiganj upazila of Sylhet.
The accused are Bahubal Police Station's former officer-in-charge Azizur Rahman Sarker, Sub-Inspector Wahidur Rahman, constables -- Ruhul Amin, Abdul Quader and Dulal Miah --, Ruhul's son Fahad Hossain and one Masum.
The victim's maternal uncle Shah Alam lodged the case with Nari O Shishu Nirjaton Domon tribunal of Habiganj.
Marzana Akhtar, a class nine student of Ullapara High School in Sirajganj, had been staying at the house of her uncle Rafiqul Islam, sub-inspector of the police station, said the case statement.
On the night of September 14, Fahad, who had became familiar with Marzana, took her to the roof of staff quarter in the station for chatting and raped her.
Catching wind of the incident, the other six accused went to Rafiqul's house in his absence and took the girl to the roof for quizzing.
SI Wahidur Rahman misbehaved with Marzana openly and forced her to show evidence of rape in front of the others, the complainant alleged in the case.
Humiliated, Marzana jumped off the roof around midnight. She was taken to the upazila health complex where she succumbed to her injuries, it said.
Fahad, however, was arrested in an unnatural death case filed the day after Marzana's suicide.
