A Rajshahi court sent four alleged Islami Chhatra Shibir activists to jail yesterday in connection with a case filed over an attack on police when law enforcers barred a Shibir procession in Katakhali Bazar on July 1.
Our Chittagong correspondent reports, police arrested two Chittagong city unit Shibir activists from Patenga yesterday on charge of bringing out an unauthorised procession.
The four in Rajshahi were arrested when police raided a mosque on Rajshahi city's outskirts yesterday morning over information that a group was holding a meeting, said police.
The arrestees are Tawhiduzzaman of Islamic studies department and Khairul Islam of philosophy department of Rajshahi University, Abdul Awal of arabic department of Rajshahi College and Md Zubair, a madrasa student.
Police had also detained Katakhali Municipality Mayor and Jamaat Ameer Mazedur Rahman and nine imams during the raid. They were released after five hours.
Mazedur, one of the 110 men accused in the July 8 charge-sheet over the murder of RU student Faruk Hossain and now on bail, denied that the four were Shibir activists and said they were discussing ways to maintain peace in Katakhali area.
Faruk, a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist, was hacked to death and dumped in a manhole on February 9, 2010 during an attack by Shibir men on the campus.
The Chittagong arrestees, Modasserul Alam, 27, and Imran Hossain Bhuiyan, hail from Noakhali district and are students of Patenga Fazil Madrasa.
Police said some 20 to 25 Shibir activists had gathered at Kathgar intersection and tried to bring out the procession.
