BNP, Jamaat both stake claim to Jhenidah-3
Local BNP and its electoral alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami are at loggerheads in Jhenidah-3 constituency as BNP former lawmaker Shahidul Islam Master and Jamaat's Jhenidah district political secretary Motiar Rahman have submitted nomination papers following approval from their respective party high command.
Both Shahidul Islam Master and Motiar Rahman are contacting with the grassroots leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat.
“Shahidul Islam Master has lost his popularity in the constituency as he faces 15 cases on charge of extortion, misappropriation of relief materials and land grabbing. Besides, Jamaat won the seat a few years back. So we want four-party nomination from this seat this time,” Moheshpur upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Bari said.
Moheshpur upazila BNP General Secretary Edrish Ali, on the other hand, said the seat was won by BNP three times since 1991 and Shahidul Islam Master has done a lot of development works in the area.
Contacted, Jamaat candidate Prof Motiar Rahman said Shahidul Islam Master, facing at least 15 cases has lost the image of four party alliance and so there must be a change of candidate to retain the seat by four-party alliance.
Shahidul Islam Master could not be contacted over cell phone after several attempts.
