Protests intensify in Bangladesh
Waves of protest against Israel's military attack on Gaza continue, as a cross-section of people in different parts of the country yesterday condemned the attack, and called for an immediate end to the atrocities.
They also urged the conscious people of the world to stand firm against what they said genocide by Israel.
Responding to a call posted on social networking site, Facebook, around 200 students of different educational institutions formed a human chain in front of the National Museum in the capital's Shahbagh under the banner of “Stop Genocide and Free Palestine”.
A participant of the programme, Abdhullah Hasan, said Israel should give compensation for the damages done by its military.
Later, the protesters marched towards the Jatiya Press Club.
Meanwhile, Gonojagoron Mancha activists under the banner of "Global solidarity with Gaza" staged a rally protesting Israel's attack on Gaza.
Addressing the rally at Shahbagh, Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of the mancha, urged international rights bodies to mount pressure on Israel to call off the attack.
Several other student bodies -- Chhatra Union, Chhatra Front -- also joined the rally.
Communist Party of Bangladesh President Mujahidul Islam Selim expressed solidarity with the programme.
Later the activists brought out a procession that marched from Shahbagh to TSC on Dhaka University campus before returning to the inception point.
In Chittagong city, Hefajat-e Islam also protested Israel's attack on Gaza, reports a staff correspondent from Chittagong.
They urged the United Nations (UN) to declare Israel a terrorist country, and demanded that the government confiscate all Israeli products in Bangladesh.
Hefajat activists brought out a protest procession from Anderkilla Shahe Jame Masjid around 2:00pm and marched towards the Chittagong Press Club where they held a rally.
In Rajshahi, over three hundred students and teachers of different educational institutions formed a human chain at Shaheb Bazar in the city around 11:30am, protesting Israel's atrocities, reports our Rajshahi University correspondent.
