BRAC University and BSRM launch 'BSRM School of Engineering' to advance innovation and sustainability

BRAC University and BSRM Group of Companies jointly inaugurated the BSRM School of Engineering on Wednesday at BRAC University's Merul Badda campus, unveiling the school's official logo, website, and the theme: "Shaping Tomorrow: Innovation for Sustainability."
This pioneering academic-industry collaboration seeks to redefine engineering education in Bangladesh by embedding innovation, ethics, and societal responsibility into its foundation. The initiative aims to cultivate a new generation of engineers focused on building an inclusive, sustainable, and humane future.
The partnership aligns with BSRM's long-standing social responsibility efforts and the legacy of BRAC University founder Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, who championed inclusive and impactful education grounded in human dignity.
The school is actively funding advanced research, developing laboratories, and providing scholarships to meritorious students facing financial hardship. It seeks to position Bangladesh as a leader in engineering education across the Global South, training students to reimagine cities, industries, and societies with human well-being at the forefront.
Alihussain Akberali, FCA, Chairman of BSRM, emphasized the private sector's role in national development. "Businesses—regardless of size—can play a vital role in shaping society and should actively collaborate with the government and other sectors," he said. "Don't look outside when your country needs you inside. Stay here. Work here. And build here… Your knowledge, your energy, your ideas are needed here. If you build a legacy now, it will serve generations to come."
Tamara Hasan Abed, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of BRAC University, echoed the sentiment. "Today, as we inaugurate the BSRM School of Engineering, we reaffirm that education must be a force for dignity, justice, and opportunity," she said. "We commit to fostering an environment where curiosity is celebrated, where diversity is cherished, and where every student believes they can be a driver of positive change."
Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar highlighted the academic significance of the collaboration. "I believe that this partnership will ensure that knowledge of the industry is put together in a meaningful way by the academia and shared with the entire world," he said. "This is what the BRAC and BRAC University synergy is about and reflects how BSRM not only does business but also focuses on safety for humanity."
The event featured testimonials from scholarship recipients, alumni, faculty members, and students. It concluded with a cultural program and the awarding of winners from a t-shirt design competition commemorating the school's launch.
Professor Arshad M. Chowdhury, Dean of the BSRM School of Engineering, delivered the welcome address. The event was moderated by Khairul Basher, Director of Communications, BRAC University.
