Former MP Afzal Hossain arrested in Meherpur

Police have arrested Afzal Hossain, a former MP from the Kishoreganj-5 constituency, from Meherpur. He was arrested in a raid at a house at the Government College intersection of the town last night.
Officer-in-charge (OC) of Meherpur Sadar Police Station Mejba Uddin said that Afzal Hossain was arrested in a raid at the house of Mamun Hossain in Taher Clinic Para of Meherpur municipality. A team of Kishoreganj District Police has left for Meherpur. Afzal Hossain will be handed over to them upon arrival.
Police sources said that Afzal Hossain was supposed to go to India through the Sonapur border in Mujibnagar upazila today morning. He had made a deal with a gang on the border for a large sum of money. Mamun Hossain, who provided him shelter, is an employee of the Afzal Shoe Company. Mamun has also been taken to the police station for questioning.
Afzal Hossain is the president of Bajitpur Upazila Awami League. Police said that several cases have been filed against him at Bajitpur Police Station after the Awami League government was overthrown in the August 5 uprising. He has been in hiding since then.
Afzal Hossain joined politics in 2008 and has been a member of parliament for four terms.
Around 7:00pm today, Bajitpur Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Md Murad Hossain said that their police had reached Meherpur.
After completing legal procedures, the detained Afzal Hossain will be handed over to their police.
