3 fishers jailed in Madaripur for defying hilsa ban

A mobile court sentenced three fishers to 20 days in jail for catching brood hilsa in Padma river at Shibchar upazila of Madaripur today (October 9, 2022), defying a government ban.

The three fishers were detained by the mobile court team from Kathalbari and Chorjanajar areas during a drive in the river this morning, said Shibchar Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Ferdous Ibne Rahim.

During the drive, the team also seized 50,000 meters of fishing net and 10kg of hilsa, he told our Shariatpur correspondent.

Later, the mobile court, led by Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (land) Md Riazur Rahman, sentenced the fishers, said Ferdous.

The seized nets were burnt and the fishes were distributed among poor people and madrasa students, added the fisheries officer.

The government imposed a 22-day ban on catching, selling, storing and transporting hilsa from October 8 to 28, to ensure safe spawning of the national fish.
