Noted former banker Mir Abdus Sattar passes away
Former banker Mir Abdus Sattar passed away from a heart attack on July 19 at 8:30 pm. He was 84.
He was laid to rest at his birthplace in Muktagacha yesterday.
He was the son of Mir Abdul Monayem, who died when Sattar was only seven years old. He was the grandson of Mir Ahmed Ali, a member of the Legislative Assembly from Mymensingh in the British Indian Government.
Abdus Sattar left behind his wife Shahre Sattar, daughter Naila Sattar, daughter Saila Das, son-in-law Robi Das, daughter Sabiha Sattar, son Mir Ahmad Shafi and daughter-in-law Supriya Dixit Shafi to mourn his death.
Sattar was an eminent banker of his time and served at the National Bank of Pakistan, Sonali Bank, the Bank of Credit and Commerce, International (BCCI), and at the UAE Bangladesh Investment Company.
He loved his country; deeply influenced by his uncle Faqueer Shahabuddin Ahmad, who later became Bangladesh's first Attorney General. He worked to support the Liberation War from his post in Hong Kong.
Sattar retired from professional life nearly two decades ago and has lived a quiet life since. He was a principled, honest, intellectually curious man who loved to travel, read, and engage in long conversations about politics, law and history.
He was an adventurous eater, a foodie, long before many knew what that meant. He could recite pages-long Tagore poems from memory, even until a year ago. He treasured life's simple pleasures and shied away from recognition.
Sattar was a true humanist and consistently made an effort to help those around him.
He was often described as a "banyan tree" by many in his family, as he offered support and shelter to those who needed it.
He will be greatly missed by his loved ones.
