Govt working to protect expats, keep overseas labour markets intact: minister

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Imran Ahmad today said the government is in continual talks with ministers of different countries which employ migrant workers from Bangladesh regarding protection of the workers amidst the Covid-19 outbreak and keeping their labour market intact post the pandemic.

"Talks are on with ministers of different countries to provide [job] security to Bangladeshi workers and save the international labour market in the post-coronavirus situation," Imran said while addressing a ceremony at his ministry office marking the appointment of Ahmed Munirus Saleheen, the new secretary to the ministry, as well as farewell of outgoing secretary Salim Reza, according to a press release.

The minister said the government has given highest priority in protecting Bangladeshi migrant workers currently living in different countries.

He said his ministry and officials of Bangladesh missions abroad are maintaining round-the-clock contact with expatriates.

He stressed the necessity for implementing the prime minister's directives with honesty, skills and sincerity.

Addressing the ceremony, Ahmed Munirus Saleheen highlighted the need for ensuring accountability. Outgoing secretary Salim Reza said initiatives have to be taken to protect the current labour market and create new ones in post-pandemic situation.

Ahmed Munirus Saleheen had previously been serving as additional secretary to the same ministry.

Salim Reza has been appointed as secretary to the railway ministry, according to a government gazette.
