Sculptors busy as Saraswati Puja nears
Sculptors are passing busy time to make idols of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning, in different areas of Jhenidah, as Saraswati Puja will be held on January 30.
The festival is celebrated in thousands of institutions and houses across the country in Bangla month of Magh every year.
“A good number of sculptors are passing busy time in making this idols. Some of them are making frame, some are pasting mud and some are painting the idols and giving the finishing touches,” said Narayan Chandra Biswas, president of Jhenidah district Hindu-Bouddha-Christian Oikyo Parishad.
Sculptor Gobinda Sarkar of Daspara under Kaliganj upazila said he has made around 90 idols this year.
“I am selling each idol for Tk 500 to Tk 1500. I hope to earn a good amount as the weather is favourable,” he said.
“We are extremely busy in making idols as we will have to complete the work before the puja, which is only 12 days away,” said Anil Paul at Collegepara village under the same upazila.
Adequate security measures, including watch by plain-clothes policemen and detectives, have been taken to ensure peaceful observance of the puja at each mandop, said Milu Mia Biswas, additional superintendent of police in Jhenidah.
