RMG workers agitate in Savar
Protesting the sacking of colleagues, several hundred workers of an RMG factory in Ashulia’s Shimultola area demonstrated in front of the factory yesterday.
Workers of Madinaple Fashions Craft Ltd started demonstrating around 10am. The sacked workers also joined the agitation.
Protesters alleged that on Wednesday, the factory authorities terminated 60 workers without prior notice, saying that they did not have sufficient work or orders. Workers also alleged that they were not compensated properly.
Rafiqul Islam Sujon, president of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers’ Federation, said authorities sacked workers without following labour law. “If the factory did not have enough work, they can terminate workers. But they have to provide workers with proper compensation and notify them beforehand.”
SK Khokon, manager of the company, said around 59 workers were sacked as per law and they also cleared the dues. Some took the money while others refused, he added.
Sana Shaminur Rahman, superintendent of Dhaka industrial police-1, said additional forces have been deployed in the area.
